A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root of a tooth. It is commonly constructed from titanium which is a biocompatible material. An implant is usually screw or cylindrical in shape. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled or tapped into the precise location of the intended tooth. The main aim during placement of the implant is to ensure close contact between the implant and surrounding jaw bone. Over time the implant will beome integrated into the surrounding bone and become stable, at which point it is ready for restoration.

Once completely stable, which can take a number of months, an internal screw is placed into the implant which provides the foundation for long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.

Implants have a number of distinct advantages over other options for tooth/teeth replacement:

  • Fixed into your mouth
  • Does not involve preparation (drilling to remove tooth tissue) of neighboring teeth
  • Superior aesthetics
  • Long lasting

We are proud to say that Dr Dharmen Patel has undergone postgraduate implant training which allows him to give our patients an expert assessment on whether implants are suitable for them and, should you choose to, confident and gentle implant placement and restoration. You can rest assured that you are in good hands with us.

The case below shows the replacement of a patient's missing upper right front tooth (central incisor) with a single titanium screw implant, which can also be seen on the x-ray (top left picture). The result looks just great!

This young lady presented to us with a upper left baby tooth which wouldn't budge and a canine tooth in the wrong position. She was born without the permanent tooth, a condition known as hypodontia. Hiren used a dental implant with bone grafting to replace the tooth with a single implant retained fixed crown and some dental composite to mask the canine tooth and restore her smile.

This gentleman had an unfortunate accident which resulted in his upper front three teeth being fractured and lost. Dharmen used two dental implants with bone grafting to support a fixed porcelain bridge made by Hiren to replace the missing teeth and do away with the patient's old unsightly and loose denture. Hiren also added some dental composite to the adjacent teeth to improve the symmetry of his smile.

This young lady presented to us with a lower baby tooth which was abscessed and infected (second to last tooth on the bottom left of this picture). Hiren used a dental implant to replace the tooth with a single implant retained fixed crown relieving the patient's pain and improving her function.
